Louis Vuitton updates some of its fan-favorite bags with colorful new braided handles for winter 2018

While of course I love seeing new designs every season, I’m often just as curious about how the world’s biggest accessory brands will find new ways to tweak and update their biggest revenues to keep shoppers intrigued and engaged. Novelty is important, but longevity is what pays the bills, and keeping things fresh for years is a whole different kind of design skill than coming up with something flashy and brand new. One of the best brands in the world at this kind of constant updating is Louis Vuitton, which churns out seemingly endless versions of its many long-standing classics, year after year.

For winter 2018, Vuitton has decided to reinvent some of its most beloved bags with a fun new detail: a colorful braided top strap. Depending on the style, braided details adorn bags in Empreinte (which has tonal straps) or Epi leather, plus several in Monogram Canvas. My favorites are the monograms, where the colored straps add some oomph and modernity to the traditional look that every bag lover knows.

As for the price, the braided handles will set you back several hundred dollars more than the bags in their original form. The monogrammed Artsy MM, for example, increases $540 from $2,000 to $2,540, and the Pochette Metis increases monogrammed $530 from $1,830 to $2,360. The jump for leather bags is similar. If you want one of these new parts, we suggest you buy quickly; most are already sold out online, but the staff at your local boutique can help you find one.
